My experience with birding

Updated: Oct 24, 2023

Writing on birds is only easy if you are a photographer and nature lover who enjoys birding. It is a tiring job as birds have quick reflexes which makes it difficult to click them. My first photography expedition with birds began at IITK, however, since I lost my hard drive I don’t have many photos left from back then. Also, my knowledge about birds is limited which will be reflected in my not naming the birds in focus here.

Pigeons near Garh Palace, Kota

In 2014, during my PhD at Buffalo, I returned to Kota for my marriage ceremony. I had all the time on me and I clicked pigeons in the wee hours. My father would keep pulses for pigeons on our home’s rooftop every morning and a lot of birds would drop by to feed themselves. Just then, I had a moment to capture them. Later, while visiting an old fort in my hometown, I got a chance to click a flock of pigeons.

Geeselings on north campus, University at Buffalo

On returning to Buffalo after my marriage in early 2015, I got busy preparing for my PhD defense and thesis. Those days were mostly occupied with my camera and thesis, which I utilized in clicking many birds and other things. The University at Buffalo has a beautiful north campus with a lake inside its campus and in its surroundings, there are lots of birds including geese. Downtown at Buffalo had Erie Lake which went all the way into Canada, where it’s called Ontario Lake. Lakeside was always covered by seagulls.

Later in Hyderabad, I clicked photos mostly from my apartment and nearby places. In a moment, I got to capture an Kite couple that had made a nest on one of the towers nearby.

Downy or Hairy Woodpecker at Omaha

My first postdoc at Omaha, I would stroll every weekend with my camera clicking on beautiful surroundings including birds. In summer, when many birds migrate and the weather is pleasant to stay outside, I got to click a few birds near the Nebraska Medical Center campus. Hope you will enjoy these photos.

NOTE: Birds were named by my friend Suhail, currently a faculty at IITH and a nature lover.
